The Kick-Off Meeting (KOM) of the H2POWRD Doctoral Network took place on 17–18 September 2025 at the prestigious TU Berlin, marking the official commencement of this ambitious project aimed at advancing research and innovation in the field of hydrogen fueled rotating detonation combustion gas turbines (RDGT). This significant event was not merely a formality; it served as a pivotal moment for the network, establishing a collaborative framework for the participants involved. The gathering brought together over 50 participants, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with intellectual exchange and networking opportunities. This diverse group included all consortium Principal Investigators (PIs), who are leading experts in their respective fields, along with the enthusiastic Doctoral Candidates (DCs) eager to embark on their research journeys. Additionally, Associated Partners (APs) were present, representing various institutions and organizations that play a crucial role in the project's ecosystem.
The agenda for the KOM was meticulously crafted to ensure that all aspects of the project were addressed comprehensively. The first day commenced with introductory sessions where each PI presented their research focus and the overarching goals of the H2POWRD network. This was followed by a series of workshops and breakout sessions designed to foster collaboration and facilitate the sharing of ideas among the participants. Doctoral Candidates had the opportunity to engage directly with their PIs, discussing their proposed research projects and seeking valuable feedback. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm as participants exchanged insights and forged connections that would be vital for the project's success.
On the second day, the focus shifted towards the logistical and administrative elements necessary for the smooth operation of the network. Key discussions revolved around the timeline for research milestones, the allocation of resources, and the establishment of communication protocols among the consortium members. The participants also delved into the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, emphasizing how the diverse expertise within the network could lead to groundbreaking advancements in RDGT research. The KOM concluded with a networking session, allowing participants to solidify partnerships and discuss potential collaborative projects that could emerge from their interactions during the meeting.
Overall, the Kick-Off Meeting not only marked the beginning of the H2POWRD Doctoral Network but also set a strong foundation for future collaboration and innovation. With the collective expertise and enthusiasm of all participants, the network is poised to make significant strides in the field of hydrogen technology, ultimately contributing to sustainable energy solutions and addressing global challenges related to energy transition.
Key Highlights of the Meeting:
Introduction of all Principal Investigators (PIs), Doctoral Candidates (DCs), and partners
Presentation of the project structure, roles, and Key Research Areas (KRAs)
Discussion on deliverables, recruitment strategy, dissemination, and reporting
Overview of training plans, secondment arrangements, and data management
Administrative briefings on budget, documentation, and project timelines
DCs also presented their backgrounds and research interests, contributing to a vibrant and collaborative start. A representative was elected among the DCs, and planning for upcoming workshops and training sessions was initiated. The meeting concluded with a lab tour at the Hermann Foettinger Institute and a group dinner.
